Any day that promotes love is a good day in my book. Unfortunately, we've turned Valentine's Day into more of a sappy romantic ritual between two people more than a day to celebrate all different types of love. You may be surprised to see I am not posting about my marriage on Valentine's Day today (though it may be a little easier for me because our anniversary is on the 18th, but I digress) Whether you have a partner or not, this day should be for everyone, because love comes in many forms.
We've heard all the self-love talks; "You must love yourself before you can love someone else." This is true and there's a reason it's a cliche. Though this isn't completely a self-love post, I do challenge you to pause and look at yourself in the mirror today. Pick 3 things you love about your appearance and 3 things you love about your inner self.
For me, physical:
I love my lips.
I've grown to love my almond-shaped eyes.
I love my skin. Though it's given me grief in the past (and still does), I'm lucky to have it.
I love my strong empathy for others.
I love my determination to be the best version of myself.
I love my creative mind. Though my mind has often been my enemy, I'm learning to embrace it.
It took me a while to write just 3 aspects in each category what I loved about myself. My guess is I'm not alone. We simply don't take the time for self-love, because often it's shamed and mistaken for being self-centered. There is nothing wrong with taking the time to appreciate you and your body.
Beyond loving ourselves and our loved ones today, however, there are so many other loves we have in life that we take for granted.
Love the way the sun shines through your bedroom window.
Love the sound of rain on your rooftop.
Love the way fuzzy slippers feel on your feet after a long day.
Love the silence.
Love how your body always wants the best for you; how it helps you heal wounds. Cherish it.
Love the laugh of a random stranger.
Love the unconditional love from your pets, or even a stranger's
Love the feeling of leaving the known
Love the feeling of adventure
Love hardships. Love the strength it will give you later.
Love the way nature humbles you.
Love the ocean's crashing sounds.
Love the smell of coffee in the morning.
Love that the sun rises and sets, everyday, whether you see it or not.
Love that you're alive.
You can have a love affair with the world. Love day is for everyone. Without love in many forms, we would be nothing.
